For a few short months during the mid-1800s, the city of Montgomery was selected as the capital of the Confederate States of America, rapidly losing out to the city of Richmond, in the state of Virginia. The city of Montgomery won a place for itself in the history of African-American rights as the location of the pivotal Montgomery Bus Boycott and Civil Rights marches.

A large portion of Montgomery's jobs is provided by the state and regional government. These governmental agencies offer around 25 percent of the local jobs. Another key cog in the local economy is the Maxwell Air Force Base. Besides government and military, major jobs derives from the following sectors: healthcare, retail and wholesale trade, agriculture, construction, transportation, insurance and finance, utilities, business and professional services, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing and education. High-tech manufacturing companies located in Montgomery include the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing plant. Montgomery is home to two public universities: Alabama State and Auburn University-Montgomery. Montgomery is a major agricultural crops processing center. Primary crops grown within the area include cotton, peanuts and soybeans. Montgomery is also a prominent regional wholesale and distribution center.

The Montgomery Zoo is a premier attraction within the city, accommodating 700 species of animals. In 1989, the zoo expanded to more than 48 acres. The Mann Wildlife Learning Museum is a large natural history museum situated at the zoo. Housing a vast selection of North American wildlife, the museum displays allow viewing from all sides. Montgomery has the oldest fine arts museum in Alabama, The Museum of Fine Arts. Founded during the year 1930, the museum has educational programs and temporary exhibitions, along with a fine collection of American paintings, Southern regional art, decorative arts and Old Master prints.
