The city of Gilbert is situated just southeast of Phoenix and is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The city of Gilbert encompasses roughly 76 square miles or 197 km2. It has made the fast transformation in recent years from being a community based on agriculture to a suburban centre which is economically diverse.
Gilbert has increased it population quite significantly in the last few decades. The 1980 population of the city of Gilbert was 5,717 residents, growing to a huge 208,453 people, according to the year 2010 census numbers. The city was established in the year 1902, due to land provided by William "Bobby" Gilbert. He gave land to the Arizona Eastern Railway, allowing them to construct a rail line between the Florence and the city of Phoenix. During the year 1912, because of the actions of Pancho Villa's forces, many Mormans who had fled the Morman colonies in Mexico decided to settle within the city of Gilbert. In 1915, they started holding church meetings at the Gilbert Elementary School and by the year 1918 they had organized themselves to become the Gilbert Ward.
Gilbert was known as the "Hay Capital of the World" during much of the early part of the 20th century because the city of Gilbert was mainly an agriculturally based economy in recent years. On par with the population growth within the town, Gilbert has rapidly transitioned to its present status as being a modern suburb in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area.
Every year during late November, Gilbert is home to an annual "Gilbert Days" celebration. This 3 day festival is in observance of the full paving of Gilbert Road all over the town. Other popular events in the city of Gilbert comprise the Hale Centre Theatre, the Riparian Institute, Deer Valley Rock Art Center, Cave Creek, Freestone Park, the Gilbert Historical Museum and the Heritage District.
There are various recreational facilities within the city of Gilbert like for instance 2 municipal swimming pools, 2 community centers and 14 parks. One of the parks has been dedicated as a skateboard park.
