The state of Rhode Island is bounded by the state of Connecticut towards the west and Massachusetts to the east and north, and it shares a water boundary with New York's Long Island to the southwest.
Rhode Island was the very first of the thirteen original colonies to declare independence from British rule, declaring itself independent on the 4th of May, 1776, two months before any other state and the convention. The state of Rhode Island was also the very last to approve the United States Constitution.
"The Ocean State" is the official nickname for Rhode Island, a reference to the state's geography. There are several big inlets and bays within Rhode island that amount to 14 percent of its whole area. The land area is around 2706 km2 or 1,045 square miles, with a total area that is considerably larger. The state of Rhode Island covers an area of about 1,214 square miles or 3,140 km2 and is bounded on the east and north by Massachusetts, on the west by the state of Connecticut, and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean and Rhode Island Sound. It shares a narrow maritime border together with New York State between Long Island and Block Island. The mean elevation of the state of Rhode Island is 200 feet or60 m. Called the Ocean State, Rhode Island has several oceanfront beaches. It is generally flat with no real mountains, and Jerimoth Hill is the state's highest natural point, 812 feet or 247 m above sea level.
The Rhode Island economy had a colonial base in farming and fishing, each of which respectively became manufacturing and shipping upon independence. Rhode Island's 2000 total gross state product was $33 billion, placing it 45th within the nation. Its 2000 per capita personal income was $29,685, 16th within the United States. The state of Rhode Island has the lowest level of energy consumption per capita of whichever state.
Citizens Financial Group is the 14th largest bank in the country and has its company headquarters in Providence. CVS Caremark and Textron, which are Fortune 500 companies are based respectively in the cities of Providence and Woonsocket. FM Global, GTECH Corporation, Hasbro, American Power Conversion, Amica Mutual Insurance and Nortek are all Fortune 1000 companies that are based within the state of Rhode Island.
The biggest industry within the state of Rhode Island is Health Services. Tourism ranks next with around 39,000 jobs, leading to related sales of roughly $3.26 billion in the year 2000. Manufacturing ranks as the third-largest industry in Rhode Island. Rhode Island's industrial outputs are fabricated metal products, costume jewelry, electrical equipment, machinery, shipbuilding and boatbuilding. Rhode Island's agricultural outputs are nursery stock, vegetables, eggs and dairy products.
