Many parts of the Commonwealth are rural. This dichotomy affects the state politics as well as state economy. The city of Philadelphia is situated in the southeast corner, Erie is in the northwest corner, Pittsburgh is in the southwest corner and Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton is the urban manufacturing centers located in the central eastern part. Philadelphia city is home to 6 Fortune 500 companies. There are more found in the suburbs, like for instance, King of Prussia; it is a leader within the financial and insurance business.

There are 8 Fortune 500 companies found in the city of Pittsburgh. Amongst these include: U.S. Steel. PPG Industries and H.J. Heinz. GE Transportation Systems is even the biggest producer of train locomotives in the United States and they are located in Erie.

Wal-mart is the biggest private business in the Commonwealth, which is like most of the US states. Second is is the University of Pennsylvania. According to statistics from January the year 2010, Pennsylvania's unemployment rate is 8.8%.
