This bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay from the eastern USA and its tributary rivers. It was first opened in 1957 and was the world's very first bride-tunnel. This gateway is the biggest ice-free harbor in the United States. The HRBT was expanded during the 1970s. The city of Hampton is considered among the earliest settlements in the US, because it could trace its earliest origins back to the early 1600s. During the year 1952, Hampton received city status following a municipal consolidation. This consolidation resulted in the City of Hampton incorporating the boundaries of an area formerly called Elizabeth City County.

Additionally, the location is the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Lincoln and is called Emancipation Oak.

The Hampton History Museum, located in the downtown center, offers the city's history. Another popular attraction is the Casemate Museum situated at Fort Monroe. This is the biggest stone fort ever to be constructed within the country. The Museum chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War and is among the main attractions. It also contains the cell which imprisoned Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center is another downtown location, which was built in 1925. It serves as the public library of the city for over 60 years. The building has undergone major renovation and restoration. Today, it presents changing exhibitions of the very best national, local and regional artists.
