Situated on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, the city of Hampton is among the 7 main cities that make up the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
The city is situated on the Hampton Roads Beltway. It is home to the HRBT or likewise known as the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel which is situated on Interstate 64. This bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay from the eastern USA and its tributary rivers. It was first opened in 1957 and was the world's very first bride-tunnel. This gateway is the biggest ice-free harbor in the United States. The HRBT was expanded during the 1970s. Even nowadays, this particular facility is the busiest and deepest within the state of Virginia.
The city of Hampton is considered among the earliest settlements in the US, because it could trace its earliest origins back to the early 1600s. The township was a quiet trading post prior to the Civil War. In 1861, the region was part of the conflict, when the Confederate army burned the city of Hampton to the ground, attempting to stop the take over of the town by the Union troops. Out of the remains left after that, former slaves who were under a degree of Union protection, built the Grand Contraband Camp. This particular camp was the very first self-contained African American community in the nation.
During the year 1952, Hampton received city status following a municipal consolidation. This consolidation resulted in the City of Hampton incorporating the boundaries of an area formerly called Elizabeth City County.
Hampton is a city with various activities to both see and do. There are a lot of cultural, recreational and historical attractions. For example, The Virginia Air & Space Center is officially the visitor center for the Langley Research Center of NASA. Visitors can enjoy a virtual reality video on the pioneers of flying in a state-of-the-art set up. They can also see the Apollo 12 Command Capsule which went to the moon.
The Hampton University Museum is located on amongst the oldest African-American universities within the United States. Originally, the University was the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Their objective was to educate freed black men and women and teach them trades and skills after the Civil War ended. Additionally, the location is the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Lincoln and is called Emancipation Oak.
The Hampton History Museum, located in the downtown center, offers the city's history. There are lots of costumed interpreters their to re-enact exhibits, helping to give context and significance to the exhibits. Another popular attraction is the Casemate Museum situated at Fort Monroe. This is the biggest stone fort ever to be constructed within the country. The Museum chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War and is among the main attractions. It also contains the cell which imprisoned Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center is another downtown location, which was built in 1925. It serves as the public library of the city for over 60 years. The building has undergone major renovation and restoration. Today, it presents changing exhibitions of the very best national, local and regional artists.
