Lansing vied with Detroit to become the state capital during the year 1847. The city of Lansing, that was a small community back then, was chosen partially because of its central location. By the year 1859, Lansing became incorporated as a city with a population of just a few thousand. As Lansing grew, a state capitol building was built and a railroad was constructed through the city. When Olds Motor Vehicle Company was established within Lansing during the year 1897, the growth of the city increased because it became a major industrial center. Automotive manufacturing as well as other industries prospered. The city of Lansing has become more diversified in recent decades, with the expansion of government, manufacturing, healthcare, banking, insurance and education. The services sector is based primarily on healthcare.
General Motors operates an assembly plant within Lansing, along with some other manufacturing facilities. Lots of residents are employed by government, information technology and biotechnology companies, and by national insurance businesses: Jackson National Life, Auto-Owners Insurance, the Accident Fund and Michigan Millers Insurance Company.
The city of Lansing has a job-creation initiative referred to as Prima Civitas. Launched in 2006 by Michigan State University in collaboration with the city of Lansing and East Lansing, it is intended to boost the area's technology business.
