Forklift Attachments Topeka - Topeka, Kansas serves as the county seat of Shawnee County and the state capital. The city is situated in the northeast portion of Kansas State along the Kansas River. The city has a present population of approximately 128,000. The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of around 230,800. Other counties within the metro area are Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, Wabaunsee and Shawnee.

Topeka is famous in the legal history of the United States as the location of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, that declared racial segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional. Three Navy ships have been named after Topeka to be able to remember its importance.

"Topeka" is word derived from the Loway and Kansa which means "to dig good potatoes." The Native Americans who occupied the area utilized the prairie potato as a key food source. The Kansa people called what is presently called the Kansas River as "Topeka." The name was initially recorded during the year 1826, but the settlement was not known as Topeka until 1855 when the founders declared it "novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." Joseph James (Jojim) was a mixed-blood Kansa Indian who thought of the name. The city was a Free-State town founded by Eastern antislavery men following the passage of the Nebraska-Kansa Bill. Topeka was established as a city during the year 1857.

Over 50 percent of Topeka's economy is based on services and government. City, county and state governments employ about one quarter of the workforce. The city's largest employer is the state of Kansas. 30 per cent of the labor force is working in services industries. Many are employed in food processing, publishing and printing, flour mills and iron foundries. There are some Fortune 500 companies with distribution or manufacturing facilities within Topeka. Well-known companies include Frito-Lay Inc, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Hallmark Cards, Payless Shoe Source and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway.

The city boasts various fine art galleries with important selections of art, including the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University. A little known fact regarding Topeka is that it is the home of the logo character for Mad Magazine, the character Alfred E. Neuman.
