As part of the Twin Cities with adjoining Minneapolis, they combine to form the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area which supports over 3.6 million residents. Native American settlements brought trade and transportation to the area historically. The community of the city of Saint Paul began at the existing Lambert's Landing. Shortly after, he renamed the settlement Saint Paul. The Log Chapel site later became the location of Saint Paul's Cathedral.

The city of Saint Paul was selected during the year 1849 to be the Minnesota Territory capital. Saint Paul is home to a lot of important institutions as it is the state capital and center to much political activity. The city of Saint Paul draws tourists from the area to the Xcel Energy Center, a multi-purpose entertainment and sports venue. The city of Saint Paul is home of the Minnesota Wild Hockey Club. The Science Museum of Minnesota is the most famous museum within the Upper Midwest.

The twin cities have a higher literacy rates as opposed to the national average. During the year 2007, Saint Paul actually saw an increase in the circulation of Sunday Newspapers. It was the only city with a population of approximately 250,000 to do so.

The key corporations of Lawson Software, Gander Mountain and Ecolab have their headquarters located in the city of Saint Paul. The leading cleaning and chemical product company Ecolab, in 2008, ranked as the cities 8th best place to work. Lawson Software is a business software and support corporation. Gander Mountain is a large retailer of sporting goods. Though 3M Company is not situated in the city, many inhabitants of Saint Paul work there. 3M employs 16,000 individuals all over the state of Minnesota. St. Jude Medical, a manufacturer of medical devices, is situated in Little Canada, a suburb of the Twin Cities.

The city of Saint Paul was home to the Twin Cities Assembly Plant of Ford Motor Company in Highland Park on the Mississippi River. The plant was closed in the month of December of 2011. Nearly all (82 percent) of Minneapolis-Saint Paul-Bloomington area residents work in the private sector.
