Arizona State University is an asset to the city and is responsible for growing research capacities.

Phoenix has historically dependent on cattle, copper, citrus, climate and cotton, that in the area is known as the "5Cs". More recently, the city of Phoenix has diversified its economy from the 5C's to include high-tech and telecommunication sectors. Intel has a big Phoenix workforce, consisting of around 10,000 individuals. Intel makes computer chips in water fabrication plants, several of which are situated in the valley. The head office of Honeywell's Aerospace division are within the city, and a lot of Honeywell's avionics and mechanical facilities are located in the metro area. Seven Fortune 500 companies are situated within Phoenix: Allied Waste, Apollo Group, Freeport-McMoRan, Avnet, PetSmart and Pinnacle West.

Golf is a cornerstone of the city's recreation and tourism industries. The warm winter weather condition attracts golfers and tourists seeking seasonal recreational opportunities. The city of Phoenix also has the following sectors: professional and business services; trade, transportation and utilities; hospitality and leisure; educational and health services; financial services; and manufacturing.
