Spring and Summer climate is similar to that of most of Midwestern cities. Tornadoes happened in the City of Springfield during the year 1957 and 2006 and thunderstorms are common.

Springfield is governed by a mayor-council kind of government. The government of the state of Illinois is based within the city of Springfield and the city proper is also the "Capital Township" governmental entity. Several of the state government entities located in Springfield comprise the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Office of the Governor of Illinois. There are 3 public and 2 private high schools within the city. District No. 186 operates the public schools within the city. The city's economy is marked by government jobs. This particular sector is responsible for a major part of Springfield's labor force.

A high portion of the jobs within the city are centered around state government as their head offices are located there. Illinois State is both the county's and the city's biggest employer as of the year 2002, employing around 17,000 people all over Sangamon County. Approximately 17,000 to 18,000 jobs within Springfield are provided by health care, transportation and utilities and the trade industries. Memorial Health Systems was the largest private sector employer in the year 2002. That year, roughly 3400 individuals worked for that company.
