 Forklift Attachments Springfield - The city of Springfield, Illinois is the 3rd largest in the state and serves as the states capital city and the county seat of Sangamon County. Based on the 2010 Census Bureau, the population of Springfield was around 116,250, making it the second most inhabited city in Illinois outside of the Chicago Metropolitan Area and the 6th most inhabited city in Illinois State.
In the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, just over 208,000 residents reside there. This region consists of Sangamon County, along with Menard County. The current site of Springfield was initially settled in the late 1810s, around the time that Illinois became a state.
Abraham Lincoln is the most well-known past resident of Springfield. He resided there from the year 1837 until the year 1861, when he moved to the White House. Several of the main tourist spots of the city comprise a lot of historic places that are connected with Lincoln. A large race riot erupted within Springfield during 1908 that led to the founding of the NAACP after the terrible lynching of two African American residents.
Springfield sits upon a mostly flat plain which cover much of the surrounding area. There is more hilly terrain near the Sangamon River. A large artificial lake called Lake Springfield is owned by City Water, Light and Power. The company called CWLP provides the City of Springfield with recreation and drinking water.
The weather of Springfield is comparable to various middle latitude areas, because residents experience hot summers and cold winters. Spring and Summer climate is similar to that of most of Midwestern cities. Tornadoes happened in the City of Springfield during the year 1957 and 2006 and thunderstorms are common.
Springfield is governed by a mayor-council kind of government. The government of the state of Illinois is based within the city of Springfield and the city proper is also the "Capital Township" governmental entity. Several of the state government entities located in Springfield comprise the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Office of the Governor of Illinois. There are 3 public and 2 private high schools within the city. District No. 186 operates the public schools within the city. The city's economy is marked by government jobs. This particular sector is responsible for a major part of Springfield's labor force.
A high portion of the jobs within the city are centered around state government as their head offices are located there. Illinois State is both the county's and the city's biggest employer as of the year 2002, employing around 17,000 people all over Sangamon County. Approximately 30,000 of the city's non-agricultural jobs are due to state, local and county government jobs, based on 2007 statistics. Approximately 17,000 to 18,000 jobs within Springfield are provided by health care, transportation and utilities and the trade industries. Memorial Health Systems was the largest private sector employer in the year 2002. That year, roughly 3400 individuals worked for that company.
