The city of Erie gets its name from the lake that derived its name from the Native American tribe that lived along the southern coast of the Great Lake. With a population of 102,000 Erie is the fourth biggest city within the state. The Metropolitan Area consists of about 280,000 inhabitants. The Urbanized Area population is around 195,000. The city of Erie forms the seat of government for Erie County.

The city is relatively close to the major metro areas of Buffalo, New York, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, Ohio. The economy is heavily dependent upon manufacturing, even though it used to be a prime location for heavy industry. Tourism, higher education and healthcare are emerging as greater driving factors of the economy. Presque Isle State Park is visited by millions on a yearly basis for water recreation. There are other attractions like a casino and a horse racetrack that have been named for the state park.

Erie was established in the year 1795. It was originally settled by both French and English settlers. Immediately after, Erie became a significant port that focused at first on the salt trade. In 1813, one of the proudest historical moments happened within the city when Commodore Oliver Perry, whose majority of ships was built within Erie, defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of the year 1812.

The city emerged as a maritime hub and eventually became a railroad hub in the westward expansion of America. Erie had become a large industrial hub by the 20th century. The manufacturing focus was mostly on steel and iron. Today, the city has grown to draw a more diverse mix of mid-sized industries. Like for instance, steel plants and small plastic have emerged and become driving forces in the city's economy. The tourism sector has largely grown in recent years too.

The city of Erie acts as a significant access point to Lake Erie, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The city boasts several places of interests and attractions in the city for recreation and culture. For example, the Erie Children's Museum specializes in tourists aged 2 to 12 and offers a large selection of interactive displays in the fields of science and the humanities. The Erie Art Museum is situated in a former U.S. Customs House. It offers a wealth of changing art exhibits featuring much on folk art and contemporary art.
