The Tocobagan Indian Tribe was the first inhabitants of the Clearwater Area. It was roughly the year 1835 when the very first settlement of the region Fort Harrison was built by the US Army. It was utilized as an outpost in the Seminole wars. Clearwater was repeatedly raided by Union gunboats during the Civil War who were in search of supplies.
The city is located near 2 major airports and several major highways. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport and the Tampa International Airport are conveniently nearby. The Coachman Park is one more famous destination within the area and is home to many annual events.
Over recent years, the downtown Clearwater area has gone through major redevelopment. There has been the completion of a new huge marina and some high rise condo buildings. General beautification has been carried out with many amenities, restaurants and new bars coming to the region. The updated downtown has been renamed the "Cleveland Street District." The Royalty Theatre is also on the renovation program. The downtown core is approximately 2 miles from Clearwater Beach and 6 miles from downtown Dunedin. When driving through numerous parts of downtown and to the different aforementioned places specifically, there are fantastic views of the Clearwater Memorial Causeway and general views of the water to see.
The spiritual head office of the Church of Scientology religion is situated within Clearwater, in the state of Florida. The Church of Scientology in Clearwater is also known as the Flag Service Organization. They have acquired a variety of properties in the area including the historic Fort Harrison Hotel and the Clearwater Bank Building. These property purchases have resulted in controversy from political standpoints, local and citizens interests combined.
There are as much as 12,000 Scientologists residing within the city of Clearwater, based on current estimates. The city of Clearwater also sees over 2,000 church members and approximately 1,200 church staff come to the city of Clearwater from outlying areas to receive religious instruction. It has been speculated that Scientology is responsible for contributing around $156.8 million per year to the city's economy.
