It also serves as the county seat of Greene County. This figure showed an increase of 5.2% ever since the 2000 census. The Springfield Metropolitan Area consists of the counties of Webster, Dallas, Polk, Greene and Christian, and their combined population came in at roughly 436,712. Springfield is known as the birthplace of Route 66 and Springfield has the nickname the Queen City of the Ozarks.
The territory that was referred to as "Missouri" was included within the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Not long afterwards, the Delaware Native Americans received land treaty where the city's Sequiota Park and the antique stores of Galloway Village are currently situated. The Kickapoo Native Americans constructed wickiups on the prairie to the west and that area still these days bears their name.
Missouri first became a state on August 10, 1821. In 1833, the legislature designated most of the southern region as a lone county. The region was named for General Nathanael Greene, a prominent figure within the American Revolutionary War. The name was chosen mostly due to a campaign by John Polk Campbell, the city's founder, in order to honor a man he admired.
The economy of the city is mostly based around the industries of health care, tourism, manufacturing, retail and education. In the year 2004, the Gross Metropolitan Product of 13.66 billion makes up around 6.7% of the state's Gross State Product.
In 2008, Springfield's leading employers included: the United States Government, St. John's Health System, Wal-Mart Stores, CoxHealth, Bass Pro Shops/Tracker Marine, Springfield Public Schools, the State of Missouri and Citizens Memorial Healthcare.
Battlefield Mall is the largest shopping mall within the region. The total retail sales of the Springfield MSA are over $5.8 billion every year, whilst Springfield alone accounts for roughly $4.1 billion annually. Roughly more than 3 million overnight visitors and millions of day trippers visit the city each year, according to the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau. There are over 6000 hotel rooms and over 60 lodging facilities. Every year, the Convention & Visitors Bureau spends over 1 million dollars marketing Springfield as a travel destination.
There are 92 parks within the city, including the Botanical Center at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 3 golf courses, a zoo and other facilities managed or owned by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. There are many programs offered by the center such as Hearts n' Parks, encouraging individuals to take part in and enjoy outdoor recreation. The department uses a network of trails and linear parks which run nearby to unique areas of the Ozarks such as creek beds and springs.
