 Forklift Attachments Aurora - The city of Aurora is the 112th largest US city and the 2nd biggest in Illinois State. The city of Aurora serves as a suburb for the city of Chicago and is located some 40 miles or 64 km west of "the Loop." Based on the records, during 2010 the population was roughly 197,900. Aurora was first founded in Kane County. Over the past 50 years, the city limits have greatly expanded and now they spill over into the Counties of Will, DuPage and Kendall. Kendall County was considered to be the fastest growing county in the USA in 2010.
New York natives Joseph and Samuel McCarty established the city of Aurora in the year 1837. Originally the settlement was called McCarty Mills. Once it amalgamated with the nearby city of West Aurora in 1857, the two communities amalgamated as one. Called the "City of Lights," the city of Aurora became the very first city in the United States to make use of electric lights in the year 1881 for lighting all of the roads in the city.
The city of Aurora was home to 6 various car businesses during parts of the early 1900s. These companies eventually closed operations and folded. A strong part of the city's economy has been manufacturing and this was an important industry during years of both World Wars and the Depression. During the 1970s and 1980s, several factories began closing, forcing the city of Aurora to explore alternate sources of income.
Aurora welcomed a riverboat casino into the city's downtown core area and development surrounding neighboring residential communities and likewise the casino started to flourish. The Hollywood Casino is a dockside gaming facility with 1200 gaming options within a 53,000 square foot building. As its namesake, the casino houses the original memorabilia from movies like The FBI Story, Wayne's World Misery, The Blues Brothers, The Natural and Titanic amongst others.
The downtown core of Aurora is located along the Fox River. During the year 2011, the city initiated a large-scale redevelopment plant to renovate the underdeveloped Stolp Island business district. Along the Fox River there are plans to construct about 6000 housing units.
This area consists of one of the most impressive architectural collections in the Midwest. Aurora features buildings by Bruce Goff, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and George Grant Elmslie.
The city is located on the edge of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. Aurora shares a long tradition of manufacturing which is likewise abundant in the Chicago metropolitan. Among the main manufacturers who have occupied the area include: Lyon Workspace Products, barber Greene Ltd., the Chicago Corset Company, the Aurora Silverplate Manufacturing Company, Caterpillar Inc., Western Wheeled Scraper Works which later became Austin-Western Inc, the Aurora Brewing Company, national Metalwares and Allsteel Metals. The most famous industry and employer was the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad, this later became Burlington Northern and they held their headquarters in Aurora.
