 Forklift Attachments Newport News - Newport News (population 180,150) is a metropolis located in Virginia, on the southwestern section of the Virginia Peninsula. The city of Newport News is amongst Virginia's biggest cities. It is part of the Norfolk - Virginia Beach - Newport News metropolitan area.
The city's airport is the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Norfolk International Airport is close by in the city of Norfolk.
Ever since the year 1621, when the city of Newport News was settled, it was only a small rural community known as "Newportes Newes." The names origin is not known. The region was the location of the Peninsula Campaign in 1861 during the Civil War. In the 1890s, Newport News became a railroad township when the eastern terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railway located here. The city of Newport News was incorporated during the year 1896, and during the year 1958, the neighboring Warwick was consolidated together with the city of Newport News.
The city of Newport News supports many industries including aerospace, military and shipbuilding. In the area, military bases are located, supplying the city of Newport News with various defensive industry suppliers. Numerous local residents are employed in these industries, and in the shipyard and in different harbor-related vocations. Newport News Shipbuilding is owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries. Coal piers are supplied by CSX Transportation, a Fortune 500 railroad company, the modern successor to C&O. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel and the James River Bridge are part of the Hampton Roads Beltway.
Within Newport News, the maritime industry is a main player. Heavy-lift cranes and container cranes can be seen operating at the busy Newport News Marine Terminal, at the end of the CSX railroad tracks. The Marine Terminal has 0.57 km2 of warehouses.
By far the city's biggest employer is Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding, employing more than 15,000 people. Fort Eustis employs over 10,000. The 3rd largest employer is Newport News School System, with approximately 5000 employees.
The city's strong cultural sector includes the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, that has a diverse art collection and hosts regular exhibitions. Popular with kids, the Hands On For Kids gallery is a fun and interactive place for art-making. Kids also like seeing the Siberian tiger, black leopard and African mandrill at the Peninsula S.P.C.A. Exotic Sanctuary. The Petting Zoo has chickens, a peacock, deer and goats. The U.S. Army Transportation Museum has models and dioramas of historic transportation machinery, as well as a full-size collection. The outdoors can be enjoyed in any of the city's 30 public parks.
