Salem is the state capital, but Portland is the most populous city. Oregon is bounded by Washington to the north, California to the south, the state of Idaho towards the east and the state of Nevada towards the southeast. The Snake River delineates the eastern boundary and the Columbia River delineates the northern boundary.
The landscape of Oregon is very diverse, encompassing the rainy Pacific coastline with forests of Douglas firs and redwoods, the rugged Cascade Mountain Range with lakes and waterfalls, and the high desert of the eastern part of the state, extending into the Great Basin. Oregon's eastern part has prairies, deserts, steppes, meadows and semi-arid shrublands. The highest elevation in Oregon State is 11,249 feet at Mount Hood.
Before the arrival of European settlers; indigenous tribes originally inhabited the area. An autonomous government was formed within the county of Oregon in the year 1843 and the Oregon Territory was created in 1848. Oregon became a state during the year 1859.
The population of Oregon State is about 3.8 million, with the majority of these residents found in the valley of the Willamette River in western Oregon. Portland's population is 583,776.
The state's only national park is Crater Lake National Park, that has amongst the deepest lakes within the world.
The Willamette Valley is a fertile region due to deposits onto the valley floor of lake sediment from Glacial Lake Missoula within western Montana. The state of Oregon is a top producer of hazelnuts and produces practically all of the domestic hazelnuts sold in the United States. Oregon State is a top wine-producing region with over 300 wineries. Wine production has been a substantial business for around forty years. The area has similar soil qualities and climate to those found within the Alsace and Burgundy regions of France. Production of cranberry is found along the Southern shoreline covering around 27,000 acres in northern Curry and southern Coos counties, all-around the city of Bandon.
In the Northeastern area of Oregon State, irrigated and dry land wheat is grown around Pendleton. Oregon also produces dairy products, cattle, sheep, poultry and eggs.
Oregon State used to be among the country's major producers of timber because of its extensive forests. Several factors have contributed to a steep decline in the amount of timber harvested from federal lands. Forest fires, over-harvesting and legal struggles over management of federal holdings have lessened timber production.
