The city of Lubbock was named after Thomas S. Lubbock, who was a former Confederate and Texas Ranger during the Civil War. Throughout this period his brother, Francis R. Lubbock, served as the governor of Texas.

Lubbock County was formed in 1876, although the present-day city was not founded until 1890. The first settlement was formed from the merger of Old Lubbock and Monterey. In 1891 Lubbock City was dubbed the county seat and the city was incorporated on the 16th of March, the year 1909.

The rail service was established shortly after the city of Lubbock was incorporated. Agriculture grew in tandem with the expansion of the railroads. The area soon became the county's marketing hub. For that reason they were called the "Hub of the Plains."

As quite a few more opportunities were presented to the city of Lubbock it continued to grow. An important boost to the cities economy came from the opening of Texas Technological College in 1925. The impact of the Great Depression were countered by the development of a couple of military training bases throughout World War II. The cities population grew rapidly when the war ended. During the '40's, the growth rate was only second to Albuquerque all over the entire country.

On the 11th of May,1970, the city of Lubbock experienced its worst tragedy in the form of a tornado. This caused 26 fatalities and has been considered among the strongest tornadoes in history. It led to more than $135 million in damages spanning over three square miles of Lubbock City. In addition to the repairs carried out on the buildings which were damaged, they created the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center as a memorial to those who were victims of this devastating natural disaster.

The city's economy is still based mostly on the agricultural business with additional income coming from different manufacturing facilities. Lubbock City continues to diversify the economy within fields such as retail trade, government, health care and education. The agricultural trade draws in approximately 22 billion dollars annually with cotton being the main crop. Cotton is not just a commodity that is profitable. It also provides help to be able to support other businesses, such as compresses, grins, cottonseed meal, lint, a denim plant and some processing factories.
