Forklift Attachments Peoria - Peoria, Arizona is a city within the Yavapai and Maricopa counties within this U.S. state. Peoria is a major suburb of Phoenix and it is situated mostly in the county of Maricopa. The city's population was 154,065 during 2010, according to the United States Census Bureau. When it comes to land area, Peoria is currently the 6th biggest city in Arizona.

The city of Peoria gets its name from Peoria, Illinois and is a corruption of an Illini word which means "prairie fire." The population of Peoria is presently bigger than that of its namesake. The Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres share the Peoria Sports Complex here and the city of Peoria is both teams home for spring training.

Peoria is situated on gently sloping, flat desert terrain in the Salt River Valley. The surroundings stretches into the foothills of the mountains situated towards the north. The Salt River is filled with seasonal rainfall and mountain snowmelt runoff. There are times when the valley becomes flooded and numerous months of backbreaking labor is demolished. In order for the area to become habitable and productive all year, the flood and drought cycle needed to be replaced with a reliable water supply that could be controlled year-round.

The pioneers decided to explore irrigation to be able to solve their water problems. John W. "Jack" Swilling organized a group of men during the year 1868 to dig the first modern irrigation ditch in the Salt River Valley. A lot more people were enticed to settle within the region because of their success and eventually the region flourished due to the revitalized irrigation system.

There are two rivers which flow into Peoria: the New River and the Agua Fria River. The Agua Fria River is often dry due to the New Waddell Dam, which holds back Lake Pleasant towards the north of Peoria. The New River Dam and additional flood control methods often make the New River dry also. There are a variety of washes and creeks that flow through the city of Peoria. Skunk Creek is among the best known and most important because of its connection with the city of Glendale that is close by and its vast trail system.

There are many mountain and hills within the northern end of Peoria. West Wing Mountain, Calderwood Butte, Twin Buttes, Sunrise Mountain, Cholla Mountain, Hieroglyphic Mountains, White Peak and East Wing Mountain are amongst the popular places for nature enthusiasts to photograph and hike.

Peoria continues to successfully expand. The majority of the land around Lake Pleasant Regional Park was annexed into Peoria in the year 1999. The Challenger Space Center of Arizona calls Peoria home and has made the city of Peoria a world class educational and cultural place.

The city completed constructing the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts during the year 2007. The majority of Peoria's growth presently is taking place within the northern and northwestern areas of the city.
