 Forklift Attachments Salem - The city of Salem, Oregon is the capital of the state and is situated along the Pacific Coast. Salem is situated within the Willamette Valley with the Willamette River running directly through it. It serves as the county seat of Marion County. Salem is in both Marion and Polk counties, with the river functioning as the boundary between counties. Salem is a mid-sized city - with 154,637 people, it is the 3rd largest within Oregon after the cities of Portland and Eugene.
The city of Salem is the main city in the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area serves more than 395,000 inhabitants. The bigger city of Portland is less than an hour away.
In a decade after its founding in 1842, the city of Salem was named the capital of the Oregon Territory, usurping Oregon City for that title. Several years later, Salem was replaced for almost a year as capital by the neighboring Corvallis City, before being restored once again to its previous status. Salem was incorporated as a city during the year 1857, making it amongst the oldest communities within Oregon. The original name of the area was Chemeketa, a Native American word that translates to "resting place" or "meeting".
The city's first two Capitol buildings were destroyed by fire. One of these was modeled in part after the U.S. Capitol building and had a copper dome. The present Oregon State Capitol building was built in the year 1938. Its capital dome is surmounted by a gold-plated pioneer statue, called the Oregon Pioneer.
Educational institutions in the city of Salem consist of Corban University, Willamette University, Chemeketa Community College, Chemawa Indian School and Oregon School for the Deaf. The largest public employer of Salem is the State of Oregon. Salem Hospital is the largest private employer with nearly 3,000 employees.
The city of Salem is a main center for agricultural food processing, serving as a vital focal point for the nearby communities. A huge number of jobs are provided by the several correctional facilities in Salem. In addition to being the home of Oregon State Penitentiary, the only maximum security facility within the state of Oregon, Salem has four state correctional facilities and the head office of the Oregon Department of Corrections.
Companies which operate within the city of Salem consist of the T-Mobile Calling Center, GE Security, Wells Fargo Customer Contact Center, NORPAC Foods, Inc., Roth's Family Markets and Sanyo. The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde operate the Spirit Mountain Casino west of Salem.
