Originally the region was inhabited by a variety of Native American tribes. In 1795, a French-Canadian fur trader established the very first trading post. The area which comprised Milwaukee was initially established by 3 different men during 1833 and 1834. The 3 townships were incorporated as Milwaukee in 1846. The city's name was derived from the Indian word "Millioke." Depending on the interpretation, the word for Milwaukee means "the good land," "pleasant or beautiful lands" or "gathering place by the water."

The first European people to pass through the region were French fur traders and missionaries who passed into the region referred to as present day Milwaukee. Solomon, Juneau, the French-Canadian explorer settled in the area during the year 1818. During the year 1864, Juneau's town along with 2 neighboring towns and became incorporated as Milwaukee. During the 1840s, lots of immigrants including Germans helped to increase the population of Milwaukee at that time and the decades after.

Milwaukee was once mainly recognized as a brewing and manufacturing powerhouse. Milwaukee's image has changed with the decline of business in most of the States. There have been lots of new additions to the economy in the last decade. Like for example, the Milwaukee Art Museum is currently home to Miller Park, which is a globally renowned addition to the museum. The Frontier Airlines Center, Milwaukee Riverwalk and the Pier Wisconsin are some of the latest developments. There has been a dramatic increase within the construction of condos, apartments and lofts, together with skyscrapers being constructed within the neighborhoods near the lakefront and the riverbanks.
