Bordering the state is Virginia in the north, to the west is Tennessee, and to the south are the states of Georgia and South Carolina. In the state are more than 100 counties. The largest city is Charlotte and the capital city is Raleigh. North Carolina's economy has undergone some transition within the last five decades. The western part of North Carolina is more than 300 miles from the coast. This mountainous region has a subtropical highland climate.

North Carolina had the 8th fastest growing state population during the 2008 and 2009 year, and was the fastest growing state on the east side of the Mississippi River.

In accordance to the Bureau of Economic Analysis statistics, the North Carolina gross state product was over $400 billion in 2008. The ranked the state as the 9th best GDP in the United States. The 2007 personal income per capita was $33,735, placing it 36th within the country.

The agriculture produced in the state of North Carolina comprises poultry and eggs, tobacco, milk, cattle, soybeans, sweet potatoes, nursery stock and hogs. Then again, the state has recently been affected by the growth of businesses within China. Roughly 1 in 5 manufacturing jobs has been lost to competition from abroad.

The growth of the urban and rural areas of North Carolina has been much different. A lot of the smaller towns in the state has suffered from job loss and population reduction. However, the larger cities of Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh have seen good growth in both economy and population during the last three decades. Many of the state's small towns traditionally developed around textile and furniture factories. When these factories closed and moved to low-wage markets within Latin America and Asia, the small towns which depended upon them suffered greatly.
