Akron City is located within the northeastern area of the state in the Great Lakes region and serves as the county seat of Summit County. The city sits along the Little Cuyahoga River approximately 60 km south of Lake Erie. Akron's economic base has changed from heavy manufacturing to research, high technology and financial businesses.
The city of Akron was established during 1825. Its positioning at the summit of the Erie and Ohio Canal promoted early growth. From the years 1860 to 1870, the thriving manufacturing, coal and railroad businesses caused another spurt in population growth.
When B.F. Goodrich, during 1969 started the first rubber business in the city of Akron, the city saw its biggest expansion because of the burgeoning rubber business as General Tire and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company soon followed. Akron immediately became known as "The Rubber Capital of the World," and European immigrants flocked there to search for work in the rubber factories. Akron's rubber industry declined in the latter part of the 20th century, beat out by better radial tires from Europe. By the 1990's only Goodyear still remained within the city.
Akron's economy has diversified ever since that time. Now, there are now more than 400 businesses involved in the polymer industry. The city of Akron is now been dubbed "The Polymer Valley" and is no longer the Rubber Capital. Motor vehicle and aeronautics production are other vital businesses. Companies in Akron City make biomedical products, metals, chemicals and plastics. Large employers comprise Newell Rubber Maid, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, L'Oreal Cosmetics, Spectrum Brands, First Energy, Lockheed-Martin, RJS Manufacturing and Includis Manufacturing Software.
For people with university and college degrees there are positions for these individuals, like for instance registered nurses, teachers, manufacturing and wholesale sales representatives, mechanical engineers, management analysts, computer applications software engineers, industrial engineers, network and computer systems administrators and financial managers.
Akron City attracts top-notch performances to the city's three performance halls, the largest of which is E.J. Thomas Hall, which seats 2955 people divided among three tiers. The hall's fine acoustics are because of an adjustable counter-weighted ceiling that changes the physical dimensions of the hall. Every year 400,000 visitors come to Akron City to see comedies, Broadway musicals, lectures, ballets, and other forms of entertainment. Musical events are offered by Akron Symphony Orchestra, Children's Concert Society and Tuesday Musical Club.
